The Battery of Happiness

By Dr. Abdulla Alkhayat

Happy moments are considered the most beautiful memories that stick in the human mind for a long time. They are those moments that give us a sense of happiness, and they are often moments of achieving victory, success and goals, in addition to the times during which one feels joy, pleasure or delight, where all of these positive feelings are the result of what an individual believes. Happiness represents a very special rule, and it is people’s own responsibility to define the framework, details and rules of happiness based on their desires, interests and needs changing from one phase to another.

Can people recharge their positive energy by recalling their past happy memories?

Undoubtedly, this could happen; yet, it primarily depends on a person’s ability to benefit from happy memories and create the appropriate memory association to recall happy memories, where a person needs to recharge his/her energy and continue their journey towards achieving their goals. In fact, it is possible to create memory associations using any of the five senses.

In practice, people should clearly identify the association factor, which may be a hand gesture, a distinctive smell, a sound or other associations that can be linked to certain memories. Then, people need to try to remember one of the most beautiful moments that made them happy – whatever those memories are – as they could be graduating from university, winning a championship or being with a loved one in a special romantic atmosphere. Next, memories are linked to the selected sense.

That is how a person can regain his/her vitality or happiness that was in the situation associated with that sense whenever that memory association is used. For example, if the association is a word and is linked with a happy situation, then the person will have the same feeling of happiness whenever he/she repeats that word. And thus, that person will have control over his/her happiness gauge as if they designed buttons for recharging the battery of their personal happiness.

On the other hand, there are some negative memory associations that arise in people as a result of undesirable situations they do not like to remember because they provoke negative feelings or remind them of moments of discomfort or misery. Some of these are feelings of sadness, loss and deprivation. Hence, it is preferable to stay away from anything that reminds us of those feelings to avoid relapsing and evoking negative energy. Therefore, obliterating such memories may be a solution for some individuals.

The most important question now is: Can we replace negative memory associations with positive ones?

Let’s try …
