The Developments in Sudan Could Bring the Region Back to Square One

By Mouayad Alzoubi

The latest events in Sudan marked by the beginning of the military operations between Sudan’s warring parties – the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) – have raised so many questions regarding what could happen in the coming days, especially as we are witnessing the execution of evacuation operations of subjects and diplomats of numerous countries. This means that Sudan is about to experience a civil war or a suffocating crisis along with the deterioration of the situations in the country which will last for a considerable period of time. All countries around the world are aware of such scenarios, so they rapidly evacuated their citizens from Sudan. And what’s making the situation even worse are the looting and theft acts, and the insecurity which will all complicate the scene more, leading Sudan to a more deteriorated situation in the coming days.

Unfortunately, the current events in Sudan will return the region to square one because we thought that an end to our crises, as a region, finally saw the light with the restoration of the Saudi-Iranian relations, the return of the diplomatic Arab work with Syria and the commencement of negotiations to resolve the Yemeni crisis, thinking that all of this was paving the way towards a region more stable in its political events and in social life. However, the recent developments in Sudan brought the region back to square one, so if this crisis lasts for a long time, the dispute between the conflicting sides will be protracted and the neighboring countries will

be definitely affected. Besides, some countries are trying to take advantage of these events, which will in turn make this crisis a hotspot whose burning flames will inevitably reach all the surrounding countries.

Now, the major question is: How will the international efforts aiming at reaching a truce and a ceasefire in Sudan be after the completion of the evacuation of their citizens? Will their efforts stop or slow down and decrease as long as their nationals are out of the Sudanese territories? The answer to this question is very important after some diplomatic missions were hit by hostile attacks in Khartoum, which was a clear message to exert pressure on the international community to interfere. But what’s the scenario after the evacuation operations end? In fact, the answer to this question might be obvious and known as the international endeavors to resolve the dispute will slow down, especially with some parties intervening in the ongoing events as they- intervening parties- see it in their interest to prolong the current conflict or to assist one party to win over the other in this war, whereas the Sudanese people are the most affected by what’s happening. The game of interests does not take into consideration the decline of social life in Sudan nor will it care for the collapse of the medical and service institutions. Actually, it is sad to say that all of this will severely impact the Sudanese community.

Based on the above, the current events in Sudan must come to an end as soon as possible because the consequences of the continued fighting and destruction won’t be beneficial to any party as our region has been through countless, similar experiences previously. Therefore, we must learn from the mistakes of neighboring and friendly countries before Sudan transforms into a safe haven for mercenaries,

especially that its neghbouring Libya is still an open corridor for such operations. In closing, we all ask God to protect Sudan and its people from all evil.
