Iraq calls US support to counter drought and pollution

PETRA
Iraq Thursday called on the United States to put pressure on the countries upstream of water and to re-pump its water shares to limit drought and desertification.

Iraqi Minister of the Environment Nizar Amedi said during a meeting in Baghdad with the US Ambassador to Iraq, Alina Romanowski, that his country wants to double the cooperation and support of the US in addressing climate change and drought.

He added that Iraq is “looking forward” to an American diplomatic role by strengthening its diplomatic efforts to increase the amount of water pumping from upstream countries.

For her part, Romanowski expressed the US’ desire to support Iraq on environmental issues and the impact of climate change, noting Washington’s readiness to exchange experiences and interest in environmental projects.
