Libya: Committee (5 + 5) confirms its readiness to provide support to secure the Libyan elections in all its stages

UNITED NATIONS SUPPORT MISSION IN LIBYA:

A STATEMENT ISSUED BY THE MEETING OF THE JOINT MILITARY COMMITTEE AND THE MILITARY AND SECURITY LEADERS IN THE CITY OF BENGHAZI.

The 5 + 5 Joint Military Committee held in the city of Benghazi, in the presence of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, a meeting that included a number of commanders of military and security units from the western, eastern and southern regions.

The meeting aims to enhance confidence between the military and security leaders to support the political process and move forward in providing a suitable environment for holding free and fair elections during the current year (2023) and accepting their results from all parties.

The meeting agreed on the following points:

Full commitment to all that resulted from the dialogue between the 5+5 Joint Military Committee and the military and security leaders in the Tunis and Tripoli meetings.

The conferees affirmed their readiness to provide all forms of support to secure the elections in all its stages.

Urging support for the efforts of the Joint Military Committee 5 + 5 and the Libyan Communication Committee emanating from it in expelling mercenaries and foreign fighters.

Initiating practical measures to start addressing the problems of the displaced, the displaced and the missing, and ensuring their safe return, in coordination with the concerned security services in the various regions of Libya.

Exchanging information regarding detainees held by both sides, and starting to take practical steps to exchange detainees as soon as possible.

The meeting appreciated the initiative of the General Command to release six of the detainees from the western region on security issues.

It was also agreed to set a date for the next meeting after the holy month of Ramadan in the city of Sebha , in the south of the country.
