Morocco: Portugal renews its support for the Moroccan initiative for autonomy

Portugal renewed its support for the Moroccan autonomy initiative, presented in 2007, which it considers a realistic, serious and reliable proposal for an approved solution within the framework of the United Nations to the Sahara issue.

In the joint declaration, which culminated in the Moroccan-Portuguese high-level meeting, held yesterday, Friday, May 12, 2023, in Lisbon, and co-chaired by the Prime Minister of the Portuguese Republic, Antonio Costa, and the Prime Minister, Aziz Akhannouch, the Portuguese government affirmed its country’s support for the United Nations-led process to reach To a political, just, lasting and mutually acceptable solution.

The two parties agreed on the exclusive competence of the United Nations in the political process and reaffirmed their support for UN Security Council Resolution 2654, which referred to the role and responsibility of the parties in seeking a realistic, practical and lasting political solution based on consensus.

Thus, Portugal joined the other European countries, which make the Moroccan autonomy initiative a serious and reliable basis for a final solution to the Sahara issue.
