The Security Council held today, Wednesday, a session to discuss the situation in Syria, during which members listened to two briefings by the Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, and the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Martin Griffiths.

According to Pedersen, the Syrians are facing a worsening humanitarian and economic crisis today, noting that the situation is still more dangerous, especially in the camps for the displaced.

He highlighted priorities that he considered important, represented by working to de-escalate, restoring relative calm on the ground, “renewing the Council’s humanitarian framework”, resuming the meetings of the Constitutional Committee in Geneva, and giving priority to working on the issue of detainees, the disappeared and the missing.

For his part, Griffiths quoted from the United Nations Human Rights Office information stating that no less than 138 civilians were killed and 249 others injured during the current year, pointing to the increase in the number of people in need of humanitarian assistance to 14.6 million people.
