Election of the Sultanate of Oman as First Vice-President of the Arabic Division of Geographical Names Experts

The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Ministry of Defense in the National Survey Authority, was elected to the position of First Deputy to head the Arab Division of Geographical Names Experts.

Staff Colonel Youssef bin Harith Al-Nabhani, a member of the National Survey Authority, was chosen to fill this position, in order to implement the results and recommendations of the Ninth Conference of Arab Experts in Geographical Names, which was held recently in the Sultanate of Oman from (5-7) this December in cooperation with the Royal Geographical Center in the Kingdom of Jordan. Hashemite, where it was decided during the conference to elect a first vice-president of the Arab Division of Geographical Names Experts, representing the Sultanate of Oman and the National Survey Authority, which came in line with the results of the activities and achievements of the National Survey Authority in the field of geographical names and its contributions to the success of the goals set for the Arab Division of Geographical Names Experts.

The Arab Division of Geographical Names Experts consists of the Arab authorities and bodies entrusted by their countries to collect, control, unify, process and document the names of places and natural landmarks in various Arab countries.

The Division is part of the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN) of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), and its existence aims to set the necessary standards for the collection, control, standardization and use of geographical names, and to exchange scientific and technical expertise among Member States, through annual conferences organized by it. The Arabic Division is also responsible for caring for geographical names in the Arab world in terms of controlling and unifying them and enabling member states to use and write them in a unified manner.
