Newspaper: Bangladesh has submitted an official application to join the BRICS group

The Dhaka Tribune newspaper quoted an informed source as saying that Bangladesh has submitted an official application to join the BRICS group.

The daily added, “The source reported that, during a discussion with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajid, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa reacted positively on this issue. In this regard, an official letter was sent to the current president,” said Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Abul Kalam Abdul Momin. BRICS and South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor


The newspaper reported that the Prime Minister of Bangladesh met with the President of South Africa last Wednesday in Geneva.

It is expected that the topic of BRICS expansion will be discussed at the next summit to be held in South Africa in August.

At present, Bangladesh has the status of “friend of BRICS” and participated in the foreign ministers’ meeting of “friends of BRICS” on Friday
