A statement issued by the Turkish Presidency’s Communications Department announced the appointment of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Davut Gul, as governor of Istanbul, to succeed Ali Yerli Kaya, who assumed the Ministry of Interior. Gul was governor of Gaziantep since 2018, before he was appointed governor of Istanbul.
The department also announced that the commander of the ground forces, Musa Oswar, had been appointed to temporarily head the Staff until another chief was appointed to succeed Lishar Guler, who took over the defense portfolio, noting that Oswar would temporarily assume the Chief of Staff while retaining his current position, and indicated that this step comes after the appointment of the former Chief of Staff. Guler holds the post of Minister of Defense in President Erdogan’s new government.

The authority also announced the appointment of Khalluk Gorgon as head of the Defense Industries Authority, noting that President Erdogan appointed Gorgon to the aforementioned position, without further details.
These appointments by Erdogan come within the framework of forming his new government cadre, following his re-election for a new term in the second round of the presidential elections that Turkey witnessed on May 28.
In a related context, the representatives of the “Justice and Development” and “National Movement” parties nominated Numan Kurtulmus, the representative of the state of “Istanbul” in the “Justice and Development” party, to preside over Parliament in its new session.
On Monday, the head of the Parliamentary Bloc for Justice and Development, Abdullah Guler, and the deputy head of the Parliamentary Bloc of the Nationalist Movement, Erkan Akcay, handed over the request for Kurtulmus’s candidacy for the presidency of Parliament to the Secretary-General of Parliament, Mehmet Ali Kumbuzoglu.
In a press statement, Guler explained that the period for submitting applications for candidacy for the presidency of Parliament began on June 3, and will continue until 24:00 on Tuesday evening.
For his part, Akcay indicated that the “nationalist movement” also nominated Kurtulmus for the presidency of Parliament, and said: “We are all confident that Mr. Numan Kurtulmus will assume the presidency of the Parliament of Turkey to the fullest.” Elections for a Speaker of Parliament will be held on June 7 at the Parliament’s General Assembly.
