The United Nations World Food Program has launched an emergency cash assistance program to support the neediest people displaced from the conflict in Sudan.

In a statement, the UN program stated that it will provide the cash assistance platform that was previously established by the World Food Program to the United Nations agencies to enable them to provide their assistance quickly to the most needy people arriving in Egypt from Sudan.

The statement added that the World Food Program and partner agencies conducted an assessment to identify the arrivals most in need of assistance, indicating that the assistance provided will allow the identified people to obtain basic food and other basic needs, noting that the World Food Program supports more than 100,000 refugees in Egypt in advance from During his current platform to provide cash assistance.

Praveen Agrawal, Representative and Country Director of the World Food Program (WFP) in Egypt, said they and their families have been exhausted by the journey they and their families had to make to reach safety and are extremely food insecure. In this time of uncertainty, cash aid helps secure their basic needs.

He added that other UN agencies will benefit from the WFP’s cash assistance platform, such as the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and other development partners, to enable them to quickly reach vulnerable families in need of support.

According to the World Food Program, this assistance comes in addition to the ready-to-eat emergency food parcels that the new arrivals receive upon their arrival. At the beginning of the crisis, the World Food Program sent more than 20 metric tons of emergency food aid containing foodstuffs fortified with vitamins and minerals.

The program has expanded its assistance with additional packages of food, including improved food, which is distributed by the Egyptian Red Crescent at the Argin and Qastal entry points on the Egyptian-Sudanese border. It also works in coordination with the Egyptian government and the Egyptian Red Crescent to provide its assistance, and has so far sent enough food aid for about 90 thousand people.

The death toll from the conflict in Sudan that broke out since mid-April between the two components of the military party, the Sudanese army forces and the Rapid Support Forces, has risen to 822, according to the latest toll announced by the Sudan Doctors Syndicate.

An armed conflict broke out between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, while the country is witnessing a political deadlock. At the beginning of last month, the signing of an agreement between the military and civilians to end the crisis in the country was postponed due to disagreements over the conditions for integrating the Rapid Support Forces into the Sudanese army, which is a basic clause in the peace agreement that was concluded reached.
