ONS JABEUR ROUNDS OFF A SPECTACULAR YEAR WITH SUCCESSFUL DEFENCE OF THE MUBADALA WORLD TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP

Ons Jabeur is looking forward to a successful season next year after concluding her participation in 2022 by winning the fourteenth edition of Mubadala World Tennis Championship in the women’s category for the second year in a row, thus becoming the first player to hold the championship title for two years in a row, as the Tunisian star was able to maintain her title After defeating Emma Raducanu, the 2021 US Open champion, on the grounds of the International Tennis Centre in Zayed Sports City in Abu Dhabi.

Ons Jabeur won the championship title last year, being the first Arab woman to participate and win in the championship, to return this year and maintain her title with a well-deserved victory. While Raducanu advanced in the first part with a score of 7-5, Jabeur dominated the second part with a score of 6-3, so the match moved to the third part, which witnessed great determination from the two players, and the Tunisian star was able to achieve the lead with a score of 10-8 and thus conclude a distinguished year that during which she competed in the finals of Wimbledon and the US Open.

After her well-deserved victory, ranked first in the women’s category in Tunisia said: “I am very glad, especially since I achieved this result against a veteran player like Emma Raducanu. After fulfilling my dream of participating in a tennis tournament in an Arab country and winning the championship title last year, my happiness doubled today as I hold the championship title for the second time in a row, especially since I was able to entertain the fans and spend a great time during the match.”

Before the start of the women’s match, the audience watched the first day of the tournament, a great dose of excitement with the men’s category qualifiers, as Stefanos Tsitsipas was able to defeat Cameron Norrie, thus winning his place in the semi-finals, where he will face the Norwegian Casper Ruud on Saturday. The Greek performed amazingly throughout the match to win a well-deserved victory after leading the first two parts with a score of 6-1 and 6-4, respectively.

The Greek star said: “Some of my friends watched my match today, and it was a pleasure to play and win in front of them. I love Abu Dhabi audience, especially since we can return to the playground excitement without any restrictions, and I look forward to my next match with Ruud, where I will put all my efforts to win and compete in the final, but I know I’m going to enjoy the match.”

After the opening match, the main court at the International Tennis Centre in Zayed Sports City witnessed the second match for the men’s category, which brought the defending champion Andrei Rublev and the Croatian Borna C’oric’ together. At the end of the match, Rublev was able to gain his place in the semi-finals on Saturday to face world number one Carlos Alcaraz, after he scored a deserved victory by leading the first part, which went in a draw, but finally, Rublev won with a score of 7-6, while the second part was easier for Rublev, who won it quickly with a score of 6-4.

Rublev said: “We played a good match, and I’m satisfied with my performance, especially since I arrived here one day earlier. Borna and I managed to play a good match, especially because Borna was a great opponent, but I am proud that I managed to keep my calm temper. The thing that pleases me the most is the huge attendance of the audience and their high passion for sports and the championship.”

The championship competitions will continue on Saturday, December 17th, which will witness the matches to determine the fifth and sixth place between C’oric’ and Norrie, while the semi-finals will start with the match between Alcaraz and Rublev, followed by the match between Tsitsipas and Ruud, where the winners will qualify for the final match.
