حقق المنتخب الأرجنتيني وللمرة الثالثة في تاريخه، فوزاً تاريخياً، في نهائي بطولة كأس العالم قطر 2022، بعد فوزه على نظيره الفرنسي بضربات الترجيح 4/2 .
أنتهت المباراة بتعادل الفريقين 3/3، حيث أحرز ليونيل ميسي الهدف الأول للأرجنتين من ضربة جزاء في الدقيقة 24، فيما سجل دي ماريا الهدف الثاني في الدقيقة 36.وأحرز كيليان مبابي هدفين لفرنسا في الدقيقتين 80 من ضربة جزاء و81 بتسديدة صاروخية.
وبعد مباراة شدت الأعصاب وأسرت الأنظار، وقف الجميع أمام ضربات الترجيح لتكون هي الحكم بينهما، معلنة فوز الأرجنتين بالكأس في البطولة التي أقيمت على ملعب بوسيل في قطر.
