The Central Bank of Tunisia keeps the interest rate at 8 percent

The Central Bank of Tunisia announced ,Thursday evening, that it will keep the main interest rate unchanged at 8 percent.

At the end of last December, the Tunisian Central Bank raised the main interest rate by 75 basis points to reach 8 percent, to confront the rise in inflation, which is the third increase in the interest rate in 2022.

The Tunisian Central Bank said in a statement, “The current direction of monetary policy would contribute to the continued relief (reduction) of inflation during the coming period.”

The statement explained that the deficit in the current account account decreased to 2.814 billion dinars ($900.25 million), equivalent to 1.8 percent of the gross domestic product at the end of July 2023, compared to 5.4 percent a year ago, supported by the increase in tourism revenues and remittances from Tunisians abroad.

Annual inflation in Tunisia rose to 9.3 percent last August from 9.1 percent last July.
