PM Meets Head of Independent Strategic Review for United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani Meets Mr. Volker Perthes, the Head of the Independent Strategic Review of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), along with his delegation.

At the start of the meeting, the Prime Minister warmly welcomed the UN team, expressing readiness to support their mission. He commended the dedication of UN workers worldwide and praised the UN Secretary-General’s moral and brave stance on the Gaza situation, which he deeply respected.

The Prime Minister emphasized the Iraqi government, as the executive body, is best placed to determine the need for the level and type of UN assistance and its desire to redefine “UNAMI” mission priorities. These may include addressing challenges like water scarcity, climate change, economic reform, and combating corruption, while upholding human rights principles and enhancing services.

The Prime Minister emphasized Iraq’s growing effectiveness and capability in addressing both internal and external challenges, actively supporting regional stability, peace, and contributing to the resolution of regional issues.

For his part, Mr. Perthes outlined the team’s consultations in New York with various UN entities, Security Council members, concerned UN member states, and independent experts. He noted the significant positive changes in Iraq since 2003, particularly in democracy and civil peace, and highlighted the government’s efforts, including the impactful Development Road Project for economic diversification and stability. The Independent Strategic Review team plans to visit Iraq and meet with federal and local government representatives and UN teams operating in the country.
