16 civilians were killed in two armed attacks in west-central Burkina Faso.

Local and security sources in Burkina Faso said Thursday that gunmen attacked a group of civilians in Kolbungo in the center-east of the country, resulting in 12 deaths and two injuries.

The security source added that another attack was launched by an armed group, resulting in four deaths in Ceraso in the west of the country, all of them civilian volunteers in the army.

The source explained that the army in Burkina Faso carried out military operations following the two attacks, which led to the killing of about ten militants.

Since 2015, Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger have witnessed a wave of violence committed by armed groups, which has caused the deaths of more than 17,000 civilians and soldiers, more than six thousand of them in 2023. The violence has also caused the displacement of more than two million people inside the country. According to the non-governmental organization ACLED.
