Britain awards humanitarian heroes a new medal in appreciation of their efforts

The British government announced on Sunday that it will honor people who have responded selflessly during or after a major humanitarian crisis around the world.

“The UK has always been a world leader in providing humanitarian assistance in the most challenging or dangerous environments,” said British Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Dowden – according to the British government’s official website.

“The award is awarded to those who have responded to emergencies both abroad and in the UK, including natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes and floods, conflict-related crises, and biological emergencies such as an epidemic,” Dowden said.

For his part, British International Development Secretary Andrew Mitchell said, “At a time when the world is facing increasing crises, this new humanitarian accolade recognizes the unsung humanitarian heroes who go above and beyond to provide assistance when disaster strikes.”

“Our work around the world depends on these exceptional people, and this award honors their outstanding contribution to responding to a major crisis,” Mitchell added.
