Local sources reported that clashes broke out between the Afghan army and Pakistani border guard forces.

According to the sources, the clashes took place in the Torkham checkpoint area in the border area, where gunfire was heard.

Media outlets quoted Pakistani security sources, without issuing official statements, that the main border crossing between Afghanistan and Pakistan was closed on Wednesday after security forces from the two countries exchanged fire.

The crossing has been closed several times in the past few years, including a closure in February that caused thousands of trucks loaded with goods to stop on both sides of the border for days.

The Torkham checkpoint is one of the three main trade and transit routes between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Islamabad also uses this checkpoint to ship its commercial goods to Central Asia.
