Former Chinese Premier Li Keqiang dies at the age of 68 due to a heart attack

The Chinese “Xinhua” agency reported the death of former Chairman of the Chinese State Council (Prime Minister) Li Keqiang at the age of 68.

The agency indicated that the former prime minister died of a heart attack.

Li Keqiang, who was born in 1955 in Anhui Province in eastern China, was one of the most prominent officials representing the “fifth generation” in the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party.

Li Keqiang joined the Communist Party in 1976, and was secretary of the Chinese Communist Youth League in the 1990s. He later held the positions of governor of Henan Province, secretary of the Party Committee of Henan Province, and then secretary of the Party Committee of Liaoning Province.

During the period between 2008 and 2013, Li Keqiang was Vice Premier of the State Council of China, where he was responsible for a wide range of issues, including economic development, price supervision, financial affairs, climate change and macroeconomic management.

Li Keqiang headed the Chinese State Council for 10 years, from 2013 until March 2023. During the period from 2012 to 2022, he was considered the second most senior member of the Standing Committee of the Politburo of the Communist Party after President Xi Jinping.

10 years ago, Li Keqiang was seen as one of the candidates to take over the leadership of the Chinese Communist Party.
