Greece holds early general elections on May 21

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced that his country will witness early parliamentary elections on May 21.

He added, in his statements during a cabinet meeting, on Tuesday, that if the elections are not decided in the first round, the second round will take place next July.

This call comes after the disaster of a train crash on February 28, in the north of the country, which killed 57 people, and affected the majority of the ruling party in opinion polls.

Mitsotakis, 55, son of the late Prime Minister Constantine Mitsotakis, remained popular throughout his four-year term.

Recently, however, Mitsotakis’ reputation has been damaged by allegations of wiretapping by state security agencies, as well as the government’s failure to protect the integrity of the rail network
