The Ministry of Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice in the Taliban government in Afghanistan said it would use security forces to prevent women from visiting a national park in Bamyan province, in the center of the country.

The ministry explained that the women did not adhere to wearing the headscarf properly when visiting the Band-e-Amir Park in Bamyan province in central Afghanistan.

Band-e-Amir is one of the main tourist attractions in Bamyan, and it became the first national park in the country in 2009 and attracts thousands of visitors every year. It is also a major source of income for local residents and their tourism businesses, restaurants, hotels and handicrafts.

The Taliban government’s decision comes a week after the Minister for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, Muhammad Khaled Hanafi, told a gathering of local officials and sheikhs in Bamyan that women were not wearing the veil properly, calling on the security forces to prevent women from visiting tourist sites.

Hanafi said at the time: “Visiting tourist attractions is not a necessity for women.”
