On Tuesday, the Taliban government in Afghanistan marked the second anniversary of its return to power by holding celebrations and declaring an official holiday, and issued a statement pledging to resist any threat to the country’s independence.

In its statement, the Taliban praised the victory that paved the way for the establishment of the “Islamic regime” in Afghanistan, and said that “the recovery of Kabul proved once again that no one can control the proud Afghan nation,” adding that “no occupier will be allowed to threaten the independence and freedom of Afghanistan.”

Flags of the “Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan” fluttered at security checkpoints across the capital, Kabul, and convoys of Taliban supporters were seen penetrating the city’s streets early Tuesday as they headed to gather in Massoud Square near the deserted US embassy building. Some men carried their weapons, others picked up Selfies, jingles blaring, young boys selling the movement’s white flag.

In the western province of Herat, a crowd of Taliban supporters chanted, “Death to the Europeans, death to the Westerners, long live the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, death to the Americans.”
