Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan directed to tighten measures to combat illegal immigration in the country, and to prepare steps that add new restrictions on granting Turkish citizenship.

President Erdogan had earlier promised Turkish citizens that they would soon feel changes as a result of the measures to combat illegal immigration.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya briefed Erdogan on the ministry’s efforts to combat illegal immigration, and in recent days large-scale anti-immigration operations have been carried out throughout Turkey, especially in Istanbul.

Yerlikaya pointed out that there are some abuses in foreigners obtaining Turkish citizenship, while TV100 confirmed that “the necessity of imposing new restrictions on Turkish citizenship has been clarified, and that there is a market for obtaining Turkish citizenship, where citizenship is granted to foreigners according to certain conditions in return for owning financial or real estate assets in Turkey.”

The Turkish government has previously amended the citizenship law, as it can be obtained after purchasing real estate in the country for an amount of no less than $400,000, or depositing an amount of the same value in a Turkish bank.
