The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said that there are about 315,000 grave violations against children committed by parties to the conflict in more than 30 conflict situations in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America since monitoring began in 2005.

In a statement issued on Monday, with the launch of the Oslo Conference on the Protection of Children in Armed Conflicts, the organization called for the necessity of adhering to international law, holding perpetrators accountable, and providing the necessary funds to protect children at risk.

She indicated, according to the United Nations news website, that at least 120,000 children were killed or maimed due to wars around the world between 2005 and 2022, an average of 20 victims per day.

She warned that the true number of grave violations, which also include recruitment, abduction and sexual violence, is likely to be much higher, noting that millions more children have been displaced from their homes and communities, have lost friends or family, or been separated from their parents or caregivers.

She stated that by 2024, the child protection sector will need $1.05 billion to meet their needs in armed conflict, rising to $1.37 billion by 2026.
