Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Health announced about 100 deaths suspected to be due to a cholera outbreak, and more than five thousand cases of infection since late last month, prompting the government to impose restrictions to stop the spread of the disease.

The Ministry explained in a statement that 30 deaths were confirmed to be due to cholera through laboratory tests, and 905 confirmed cases were recorded, in addition to 4,609 suspected cases.

For its part, the government in Zimbabwe decided to stop large gatherings in some of the most affected areas in parts of Manicaland and Masvingo regions.

It is noteworthy that cholera is transmitted through water, and can spread quickly in areas suffering from poor sanitation, and is caused by consuming contaminated water or food.

More than 4,000 people died in Zimbabwe as a result of a cholera outbreak in the country in 2008 and 2009.
