United Nations: 5.3 million people were displaced due to the war in Sudan

A report issued by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said that about 5.3 million people have fled the war in Sudan since mid-April.

The report indicated that the number of displaced people inside Sudan amounted to more than 4.2 million people as of September 19, as they were displaced to 3,929 sites in all 18 Sudanese states.

The report quoted the United Nations Refugee Agency as saying that more than one million people crossed Sudan’s borders into neighboring countries, including the Central African Republic, Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia and South Sudan.

The office appealed to donors to increase humanitarian funding for local and international organizations that provide vital aid in Sudan and neighboring countries, noting that UN-led humanitarian appeals suffer from severely weak funding, as only 31% of the required needs have been provided.

According to the Sudanese Ministry of Health, the war in Sudan has so far resulted in the death of 3,000 people and the injury of 6,000 others.
